How does the abortion pill work?

“Women Abortion Clinic-Medical abortion procedure” is the popular name for using two different medicines to end a pregnancy: mifepristone and misoprostol.

Your doctor or nurse will give you the first pill, mifepristone, at the clinic. Pregnancy needs a hormone called progesterone to grow normally. Mifepristone blocks your body’s own progesterone. You’ll also get some antibiotics.

You use the second medicine, misoprostol, 6-48 hours later, usually at home. This medicine causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus. It’s kind of like having a really heavy, crampy period, and the process is very similar to an early miscarriage.

How effective is the abortion pill?

Women Abortion Clinic

The abortion pill is very effective. For people who are 8 weeks pregnant or less, it works about 98 out of 100 times. From 8-9 weeks pregnant, it works about 96 out of 100 times. From 9-10 weeks, it works 93 out of 100 times.

The abortion pill usually works, but if it doesn’t, you can take more medicine or have an in-clinic abortion to complete the abortion.

When can I take the abortion pill?|

Women Abortion Clinic Germiston

You usually can get a medication abortion up to 70 days (10 weeks) after the first day of your last period. If it has been 71 days or more since the first day of your last period, you can have an in-clinic abortion to end your pregnancy.

Why do people choose the abortion pill?

Which kind of abortion you choose all depends on your personal preference and situation. With medication abortion, some people like that you don’t need to have a procedure in a doctor’s office. You can have your medication abortion at home or in another comfortable place that you choose. You get to decide who you want to be with during your abortion, or you can go it alone. Because medication abortion is similar to a miscarriage, many people feel like it’s more “natural” and less invasive.

Your doctor, nurse, or health center staff can help you decide which kind of abortion is best for you.

Can the abortion pill be reversed after you have taken it?

Here’s the deal: The “abortion pill” is the popular name for a safe and effective way to end an early pregnancy using a combination of two medicines: mifepristone and misoprostol. The first medicine (mifepristone) is given at a health center or your health care provider’s office. After taking mifepristone, you take a second medication (misoprostol) at home 6-48 hours later. This causes cramping and bleeding and empties your uterus.

Claims about treatments that reverse the effects of medication abortion are out there, and a handful of states require doctors and nurses to tell their patients about them before they can provide abortion care. But these claims haven’t been proven in reliable medical studies — nor have they been tested for safety, effectiveness, or the likelihood of side effects — so experts like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists reject these untested supposed treatments.

Studies on the abortion pill do show that if you take the first medicine but not the second, the abortion pill is less likely to work. So if you’ve begun the process of having an abortion using the abortion pill but are having second thoughts, contact the doctor or nurse you saw for the abortion right away to talk about your best next steps and what to expect.

How does Abortion Clinics Germiston Perform Abortion

Abortion Clinics Germiston specializes in a medical abortion procedure where by we shall use medically approved abortion pills to terminate the pregnancy.

On your first visit to our women’s clinic in Johannesburg counseling  will be provided free of charge.

The doctor will  perform a pregnancy test to confirm the pregnancy.

We shall explain to you how an abortion works,

How long the medical abortion procedure takes,

The side effects of  using medical abortion pills

and how to care for yourself after the medical abortion procedure.

STEP ONE

The doctor will then request you to place one abortion pill under your tongue. This pill is meant to block the female hormone called progesterone.

Progesterone is the hormone that supports a pregnancy and without it, the uterine lining begins to shed, hence softening the cervix.

STEP TWO

After  a few hours, another set of abortion pill  will be inserted inside your vagina. This can either be done by yourself or ask the doctor to assist you.

This  abortion pill will cause cramping and bleeding might start after two to three hours.

You may see large blood clots at the time of the abortion and if the pain persists then you will need to take some pain medicine provided by the clinic

After a Vacuum Aspiration or Dilation and Evacuation Abortion

Women Abortion Clinic

After a vacuum aspiration abortion or a dilation and evacuation (D&E) abortion, you will go to a recovery area to rest. The staff will periodically check your vital signs and bleeding. It is normal to bleed moderately or even to pass small clots; the intensity of the cramping usually lessens during the first half hour.

Depending on the procedure, the type of anesthesia you had, and how you are feeling, you may stay in the recovery area from 20 minutes to an hour or more. If you had IV sedation or general anesthesia, you will need someone to drive or accompany you home.

Before you leave, the staff will provide information about what to expect over the next few days and what signs to look for that might indicate a complication. Be sure you know the emergency number to call in case problems arise. You may also receive antibiotics to prevent infection and a medication to help minimize the bleeding; avoid alcohol, as it can increase bleeding. Women Abortion Clinic

Prior to the abortion, your blood may have been drawn to check for anemia and the Rh factor. If you are Rh-negative and the fetus was Rh-positive, you could form antibodies against the Rh factor in the fetal blood cells, which, in a subsequent pregnancy, can react against a Rh-positive fetus, causing serious harm. To prevent you from forming these antibodies, your provider will give you an injection of a blood derivative, such as RhoGAM, within 72 hours after the abortion.

After a Medication Abortion

Most clinics require a follow-up visit to confirm that the abortion is complete. The clinician will do a physical examination, ultrasound or blood pregnancy test. Sometimes these services can be managed by phone without having to return to the clinic.

At Home

Women Abortion Clinic

With any abortion, avoid putting anything into your vagina (no tampons, no sexual intercourse, and no douching) for five days after the abortion, as the cervix is open and there is a greater chance of an infection during this time.

Bleeding ranges from none at all to a light or moderate flow, which may stop and then start again. Some signs of pregnancy, such as nausea, usually get better in a day or two, while others, including breast tenderness, may take a week or two. Women Abortion Clinic

You may also be advised to rest and to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise. Self-care is important, but work, school and family circumstances may make some recommendations unrealistic. In addition, no studies have shown that these activities actually increase the risk of complications after abortion. The best guide is to listen to your body and use common sense.

Follow-Up

You may be given a follow-up appointment for two to three weeks after the abortion. At this visit, the clinician will check how you are doing emotionally and physically. Women Abortion Clinic|Most women feel fine and do not have any problems after an abortion, but it’s also normal to feel tired or to have cramps for several days.

Dealing with Emotions|

women Abortion Clinic

Emotionally, most women report feeling relief after an abortion, but it is also perfectly normal to have mixed or even negative feelings. The decision to terminate a pregnancy can be sad or stressful. It may be made more upsetting by the stigma against abortion fueled by those who are opposed to abortion rights. These recommended resources provide support to women who have had an abortion as well as their partners, families and friends.

Birth Control

Women Abortion Clinic

Because you can get pregnant again shortly after an abortion, even before your first period, it’s important to use reliable birth control if you don’t want another pregnancy. For more information, see “Starting Birth Control After an Abortion.”
